One of the most common questions patients ask before their Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation® procedure is: 'What is the recovery like?' The answer is one of the most pleasant surprises in modern dentistry.
Immediately After the Procedure
Because the Pinhole Surgical Technique® involves no scalpels, no sutures, and no tissue harvesting, the immediate post-operative experience is dramatically different from traditional gum grafting. Most patients report minimal discomfort — often describing it as less painful than a routine dental cleaning.
You may experience some minor soreness or tenderness in the treated area, which typically resolves within 24-48 hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient for any discomfort.
The First 24-48 Hours
In the first day or two after your procedure, you should eat soft foods and avoid anything hard, crunchy, or chewy. Avoid using straws, smoking, or any activity that creates suction in the mouth. Gentle rinsing with warm salt water can help keep the area clean.
The First Week
Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how quickly they return to normal activities. Many patients return to work the next day. You should continue to eat soft foods for the first week and avoid vigorous brushing in the treated area.
Long-Term Results
The gum tissue will continue to settle into its new position over the following weeks. Most patients see their final results within 2-4 weeks. A 14.5-year follow-up study has confirmed that these results are durable and long-lasting.
